Central Texas public radio station KNCT-FM began broadcasting in November 1970 from studios situated on the campus of Central Texas College in Killeen, Texas. Initially operating on a limited schedule from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, KNCT-FM has since evolved to provide around-the-clock programming that includes a blend of beautiful music, news updates, weather reports, and public affairs discussions. With a broadcast power of 50,000 watts emanating from a transmitter near Stillhouse Hollow Reservoir, KNCT-FM caters to a vast audience across Central Texas, encompassing areas such as Killeen, Copperas Cove, Belton, Temple, Waco, Georgetown, Round Rock, and Austin.
The station offers a diverse range of high-quality programming not typically found on commercial radio stations. This includes the signature Simply Beautiful music format alongside engaging public service initiatives and specialized programs tailored to cater to various interests. Listeners can enjoy an array of content such as public affairs features like "Senior Report," outdoor sports coverage on "On the Dock," national news sourced from the Associated Press, as well as distinctive programs like "Stardate" and "Sounds of Texas." Additionally, KNCT-FM presents music-centric shows such as "Sock Hop Saturday Night" dedicated to oldies enthusiasts, and two spotlight features focusing on the Big Band era – "Swingin’ Down the Lane" and "Big Band Sunday." Audiences with HD radio capability can access the station's Simply Classical channel on 91.3-2 or live stream content via the KNCT-FM website.
Moreover, KNCT-FM serves as an educational platform for students enrolled in the Communication and Media Technology Program at Central Texas College. The station is sustained through a combination of grants from Central Texas College and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting along with generous contributions from dedicated listeners. Donations made to KNCT-FM are tax-deductible in line with applicable laws.
